31 December, 2009, 16:03 Flight 253: A Wakeup to War Call for the World
permalink
On December 25th, a young Yemeni national sets out to commit mass murder in the skies over the US. Taking his place in line at the Amsterdam Airport (Schiphol) Delta Airlines ticket counter, the boyish looking, 23-year-old man purchases a one-way ticket with cash. He carries no luggage.
The son of a wealthy Nigerian banker, the man, whose name is Umar Farouk Abdulmetallab, is a committed Muslim. He also belongs to a 550,000-person-strong international security watch-list identifying suspected radical-Muslim terrorists. International law however, permits him to fly the friendly skies.
Maybe the Delta ticket issuer is aware of his suspected-terrorist-who-can-fly status, but how is he or she to know that inside his underwear, Abdulmetallab is storing enough high-explosive powder and charges to bring down a passenger jet?
Most of the six hour, fifty minute flight proves uneventful. That is until the final 10 minutes, when a flight attendant begins to smell smoke. That acrid smoke is coming from the 80 grams of high-explosive charge which has turned into an incendiary device immediately after Abdulmutalleb triggered what turns out to be a faulty detonator. The fire that spreads from his BVDs to his assigned seat spread fast, from floor to baggage compartment.
Chaos at 30,000 feet ensues.
Flight attendants scream, passengers panic, children cry. Even the pilot sounds “nervous” when loudly and forcefully he exclaims “Emergency Landing” over the intercom.
Subdued by brave and vigilant passengers, the now badly burned, would-be Al Qaeda bomber does not fight back. As the fire is doused, the flight captain puts the pedal-to-the-metal and guns the plane into a near nose-dive for its emergency landing. It might be a terrifying, if not traumatic, way to end an overseas flight, but at least the 277 passengers and crew make it to Detroit in one piece.
In a next-morning interview for US national television, an obviously shaken Director of Homeland National Security, Janet Napolitano, is quoted as saying, “the system worked.” Feigning confidence, she adds, “Everybody played an important role here. The passengers and crew of the flight took the appropriate action…So the whole process of making sure that we respond properly, correctly and effectively went very smoothly.”
Not surprisingly, when an outraged America hears these words coming from the very woman who is supposed to be heading up our most coveted security agency, an amended statement is promptly issued. But this time, instead of claiming the system worked, Napolitano admits the sad truth: “The system failed miserably.”
Why?
Because there is no system for preventing terror in the skies. Not when you must rely on civilians to fight trained bombers. There is no system when your program of security is based entirely upon the principal of waiting until a terrorist attack occurs first. Then, and only then, do we react. Had average citizens not responded appropriately and selflessly to the flight 253 crisis, nearly 300 people would have become casualties of the ongoing terror war. “War” being the key word here.
While the US has been hunkered down trying to pass socialized medicine, the “War on Terror”—and it is a world war—has been pushed to the back of the priority line. Fact is, while the Obama administration placidly ignores the hostile Muslim radicals who hide behind God to justify their murderous raison d’etre, they have been able to re-organize and devise new plans and strategies for attacking the West. How do we fight this terrorist war in the skies? How do we defend ourselves without making it up as we go?
While the academics and left wing politicos ponder enemy-friendly solutions like trying to understand what motivates their anger towards us, more and more bombers are “on their way.” That is according to Abdulmutalleb, who revealed to officials just days ago that Al Qaeda is gearing up to hit more Americans who fly. According to Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism czar, “They know that this is a weakness and an Achilles’ heel in our airport security system.” But if our airport security system is our Achilles’ Heel, than an undermined, understaffed, underpowered, and inept Department of National Homeland Security is our soft underbelly.
With another air attack seemingly imminent in the near future, here are just a few state-of-dire-emergency steps I propose we undertake to make things more immediately safe:
- Barack Obama must get tough. He must issue a live broadcast in which he makes an international declaration of war on Al Qaeda and all radical Muslim fundamentalists, including the countries and organizations that harbor them. A similar declaration was made during the Bush administration, but Mr. Obama needs to reiterate it and do it now. The Western world needs to know he’s willing to fight evil Muslim fundamentalists, not empathize with them or, at the very least, ignore them.
- Transfer the Department of National Homeland Security to the military. Put the war experts in charge of fighting this new kind of war.
- Without question, place at least two Air Marshals aboard every flight possible, along with at least one bomb-sniffing dog. The move will take up at least two airline seats that would otherwise generate income, but a modest rise in ticket price will more than pay for it.
- Work closely with European counterparts, including the military, to weed out suspected terrorist suspects and place them in an accessible data base much like the one that already exists. But in this case, under no circumstances should a suspect be allowed to fly unless placed under restraint and accompanied by armed guards.
- Institute Emergency Social Profiling. This will, of course, anger a lot of Civil Libertarians, but what’s the one thing the terrorists have in common? They’re all Muslim. Naturally, most of these people are peace-loving and are ashamed of what the radicals have done to their religion. But the “bad apple” rule applies here. Airports need to screen for the Muslim faith and then respectfully make an educated guess as to whether or not the passenger poses a threat.
- Install full body-scan machines in all international airports. This is actually being accomplished in America and Europe, but thus far it’s slow going.
- Reinstitute and/or maintain Patriot Act wiretap provisions so that emails, cell phones and other types of personal communications belonging to suspected terrorists can be accessed by law.
Whether you agree with any of these suggestions or not is up to you. But I do invite you to comment at will. The point here is not that I’m hateful of Muslims, or siding with conservatives (I’m an independent), or don’t support basic human rights. The point is that we’re at war with radical fundamentalists who will stop at nothing to see Westerners and Jews slaughtered both on the ground and in the air. The point also, is that thus far, the Obama administration’s observance to national and international security is “catastrophically” weak.
I hope that before another evil man like Umar Abdolmutallab is able to sneak aboard a passenger jet full of innocent civilians and this time, succeed in blowing it out of the sky in the name of Allah, that Obama realizes that what he’s dealing with is as serious as the Nazi threat the world faced so many decades ago. There’s simply no place for peace, love and understanding when it comes to Muslim murderers. Perhaps we had to resort to racial profiling during World War II, but it was a necessary evil that aided in the destruction of a far greater evil. One that, like radical Muslim fundamentalism, will succeed at wiping out entire races of peace-loving people if left unchecked.

22 December, 2009, 13:34 New US lethal injection method too good for evil men
permalink
The last thing Kenneth Biros’ mother was thinking when she delivered him more than 50 years ago was that his execution would give birth to a new means of lethal injection. But that’s precisely what transpired two weeks ago on the cold and overcast morning of December 8, when the State of Ohio executed the first degree murderer utilizing an “untested method of lethal injection.”
Pronounced dead at 11:47, the monster that was Kenneth Biros had, just ten minutes before, been the first man in the history of the United States penal system to be forcibly injected with a single-drug dose of sodium thiopental, which caused his circulatory system to stop. The ten minutes it took to administer death came as a surprise to prison officials, who were told to expect the execution process to take upwards of 30 minutes.
Biros had been convicted for the murder and gruesome dismemberment of Tami Engstrom, a 22-year-old Ohio native. Moments after his final appeal had been denied, and as the needle was about to be pushed into the vein, Biros had a few select final words for the small crowd of witnesses: “Now I’m paroled to heaven. I will now spend all of my holidays with my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Peace be with you all, Amen.”
Biros’s execution became major news when it was decided by Ohio prison officials that he would be the guinea pig for the new method of lethal injection which is designed to replace the more popular three-drug killer cocktail of sodium pentothal, pancuronium bromide and potassium chloride. Administered in stages, the first drug is meant to paralyze the convict while the second two stop the lungs and inevitably the heart. The procedure is also said to be painful if not agonizing. For that reason, it’s also thought to be inhumane.
Says Ty Alper, Associate Director for the Death Penalty Clinic at California’s Berkeley School of Law about the introduction of the single injection method: “This is a significant step forward. Paralyzing inmates before executing them so we can’t tell whether they are suffering is a barbaric practice, and Ohio should be commended for stopping it.”

Back in 1998 when I was doing research for what would become my first crime novel, I had the very good fortune of being allowed behind the walls of Green Haven Prison and Sing Sing Prison by a former maximum security prison warden whose memoirs I was ghosting at the time. This wasn’t your garden variety prison tour I was being offered. Because of my close professional relationship to the ex-warden, I was able to head into the bowels of the prison, where the most violent offenders were locked up in cages within cages.
I was also allowed to enter into Green Haven’s execution chamber where the electric chair was once housed (after being relocated from Sing Sing). With the electric chair now stored in a museum, what had replaced it was a simple black vinyl covered gurney. Behind it was a machine which would administer the lethal injections by means of remote control.
I can recall standing inside that small, sanitary, concrete floored room where men had been put to death. I placed my hand on the gurney and was even invited to lie down on it, which I did. The sensation of looking straight up at the bright, blinding, white overhead light was not one I would forget anytime soon.
I recall asking the warden what it was like to see an execution take place. He’d been mandated to witness more than a few in his days as a warden. Execution by electric chair, he admitted, was gruesome and violent. In one instance, a man’s skull cap caught fire while he was still alive. But when I asked him if he thought lethal injection a more humane method, the tall, African American man shook his head. He’d also witnessed more than one lethal injection executions in neighboring states. During all three, he explained, the convicts seemed to be convulsing and choking. One even bled from the nose and mouth.
The final lethal injection straw for Ohio came with the botched execution of Romell Broom who now bears the distinction of being the only inmate in history to walk away from his own execution. How can this be? After a medical doctor and a handful of nurses couldn’t find a vein in Broom’s arms that was willing to take a needle, even after a record “18 puncture attempts,” the execution was called off. Talk about a bad day at the office.
But it was immediately following that capital punishment train wreck that Ohio officials called for a change from the three injection protocol to the single injection. They also called for a backup plan, in light of Broom’s new lease on life. In this case, if the veins will not cooperate, executioners can inject a powerful toxic chemical mix directly into a muscle in lieu of the bloodstream.
Feel sorry for these poor souls who must undergo the horrible lethal injection procedure? Think it’s inhumane to put another human being to death regardless of how that death is administered? Think capital punishment in the modern world is a barbaric ancient practice?
Take the case of the aforementioned Broom. According to an Ohio prosecutor who helped put the murderer away, “In all cases it is more humane than what these murderers did to these innocent victims…Broom brutally raped and murdered a 14-year-old child by plunging a knife seven times into her chest. They ought to have him in a waiting room, and as soon as this procedure is deemed successful (with Biros), they should bring him in and put him on the table before they put the equipment away.”
Did the God-fearing Biros deserve to die via an untested means of lethal injection?
Consider his crime. After luring a drunken Tami Engstrom into a “cabin” located behind his house, Biros proceeded to rape and beat the married woman. He also began to stab her repeatedly. All totaled, the coroner would discover 91 separate stab wounds, some of which were inflicted after death. But Biros, wouldn’t stop there. Needing a means of disposing the body, he mutilated the corpse by dismembering it. As the story is recounted in a website devoted to the grisly murder, “her head and right breast were hacked off. Her naked torso had been eviscerated, the anus, rectum, bowels, bladder, and sex organs removed as well. Later investigators discovered Tami's intestines, black leather coat, and shoe in a swampy area near a set of railroad tracks.”
Maybe a humane means of lethal injection is too good for men like Biros and Broom. Maybe, in the end, it would be easier to tie them up to stake and subject them to a firing squad. Perhaps we should make a return to the gallows. No matter what method of execution we utilize for these killers, one thing is for certain: not a whole lot of time should be spent considering how painful it is for them. I’m sure the families of the victims would agree.

17 December, 2009, 16:29 Homeless Charity Gets Evicted from New York City
permalink
It ain't a great day to be homeless in New York City today.
But then, is it ever a great day to be living in the streets?
That's the very question the United Homeless Organization asked back in 1985 when its founder, Stephen Riley, who operates the charitable organization from out of his Bronx apartment, decided to solicit funds-for-the-homeless via a series of sidewalk tables and jugs set up in strategic spots all over the great Big Apple.
While the organization seemed on the surface to be a benevolent one, New York's feisty and political savvy, “I-can-smell-the-Oval-Office-right-now” Attorney General, Andrew Cuomo, has smelled a skunk lurking beneath all that jugged goodness for a while now. He sued the faux charity this past November, accusing Riley and his Director of Operations, Myra Walker, of utilizing funds that were supposed to go to the homeless for "personal expenses."
Turns out, Cuomo's crusade against the "jug heads" has paid off.
Just this morning, it was announced that a New York judge has issued an interim court order that will effectively shut down UHO at least until January 11, 2010. It will also allow the State Attorney General's Office to seize all of its assets which includes not only cash stowed away in various checking accounts, but vehicles and more. Removal of the tables and their collection jugs will also be mandated.
Responding to the court order, the New York Post had this to say: "Jug Heads, Beg Off!" On the other hand, the New York Times did some real investigating into the lawsuit's details, reporting that, "the group's president, a formerly homeless Bronx man named Stephen Riley, and its
director, Myrna Walker, used tens of thousands of dollars from the group for personal expenses and failed to provide any services for the homeless."
What exactly did Riley and Walker do with all that cash?
They ate a lot, hitting Manhattan up for its superlative restaurants and eateries. Having caught the travel bug, they took numerous trips. They hooked up the Bronx apartment with cable TV and, at the same time, did a lot of TV shopping, patronizing the Home Shopping Network for a bunch of useless junk.
But the madness didn't stop there. Not by a long shot.

According to reports, the scam artists also spent untold amounts on video games from the local GameStop. And how's this for irony? The once-starving homeless man used money that was supposed to be spent on food-for-the-hungry on a Weight Watcher's membership. All I can say is Riley and Walker should be thanking the good Lord that they aren't living in French Revolution era Paris.
Specifically, Cuomo's charges include, but are not limited to:
1. Using donations for personal use. In other words, Riley and Walker were pocketing the cash from the jugs, and heading straight to the Jersey Ikea and GameStop.
2. Soliciting donations under false pretenses. We're talking a couple of big time liars here.
3. Failing to keep records of accounts receivable/payable. What Tony Soprano might refer to as, "Fixin' da books."
4. No "governance or financial oversight." They assumed Cuomo was too stupid to catch on to their "sham." Big mistake.
Says the steel-faced, black-haired Cuomo: "Today's court order prevents UHO from further exploiting the trust and good will of New Yorkers." He added cautiously, "But this organization's bad behavior shouldn't undermine the public's willingness to donate to legitimate charities. As my office continues to aggressively monitor the activities of UHO and other charities, New Yorkers should feel more confident in giving this holiday season."
Naturally when contacted about making a statement on his behalf regarding his organization's alleged misappropriation of funds, Riley had no comment.
Maybe he was too busy counting calories. Neither did his “shopaholic” cohort, Walker.
However, both will have their day in court on January 11, 2010, when the case against them will be heard by Justice Barbara R. Kapnick of the New York State Supreme Court.
No matter the outcome of the court proceedings, the streets of New York won't be seeing any UHO tables or jugs anytime soon. Lucky for the homeless there's still the good old Salvation Army. Not so lucky for Riley and Walker, there's also the dreaded IRS.

Vince,
I couldn't agree more with everything you're saying. This took me by surprise because I saw in a blog some months ago that you had a concern about a 'deadly' month in Afghanistan where 23 guys died. While I don't like to see any one of our guys get killed, when you're a soldier that's what you sign up for. We lost 50,000 at Gettysburg. We need to get much thicker skin, and quickly. But I digress....
One thing you said that I'd like to take issue on, though, is your assertion that "Naturally, most of these people are peace-loving and are ashamed of what the radicals have done to their religion." Oh really? Like who?
10 January, 2010, 15:23
my response to these sub human, not even animals do the things these muslims do, I have absolutely no pity for this cancer that has started to spread through the world, what are our governments doing, or when are they going to wake up, these people want to take over the world by numbers, they have absolutely no respect for any other religion except their oun, which is nothing but lies and imagination, they pray to a frekin pedophile, they go ass sniffing every friday, but only to smell each others ass, and then they say they dont have homosexuals in their religion, hahahahaha, I personally like to smell a womans ass, its more delicate, but they'll get on their knees every friday and smell onother mans ass, lovely, just lovely, I would be the first to round them up, put them in concentration camps, or give them all a one way ticket to wherever the hell they came from.....

Congratualtions President Obama...It looks like you're reading RT....From today's NY Post: 'We are at war!'
Finally the president is saying it like it is!!!

No fly lists, informants and passports controls at airports are not enough to stop someone that should be stopped from getting on a plane. Where is the airport surveillance tape showing this guy going through/ bypassing passport control?

I'm glad you're interested in history. Perhaps you know of the overthrow of the only Democratically elected government Iran ever had? We then installed a brutal Dictator who murdered and tortured countless Iranians. The Shah was our puppet. We also shot down an Iranian airliner full of civilians murdering over 300. Iran has every right to defend itself against aggression from any quarter. I not only expect them too I urge them to. We've toppled Democratically elected governments around the world for decades. We've murdered millions since WWII. One of the reasons this keeps happening is because people believe the B.S. The Vietnamese were never a threat to Home and Hearth. Neither were the Hondurans. Nor Nicaraguans. The list goes on. I look forward to your column urging an attack on the people of Iran. I'm sure it will be filled with the same falsehoods that have a long and bloody trail of Human misery.
Peace. It's not War.

Chris,
Excellent commentary, excellent points. At the time I penned the blog, the information on the perp's not having a passport was still sketchy and unsubstantiated, so in the spirit of good journalism, I left it out. Also, his having been helped aboard by security despite the lack of passport. You're right in that all terrorists are not Muslim. However, all radical Muslim terrorists are. That's the point here and I see no alternative but to begin a program of social profiling in the name of security. This is war. I also agree that Iraq was a mistake, however, it is not what triggered terrorism. Muslim terrorists have been attacked the US and the West for more than 30 years. See my new blog which should be up soon regarding Iran's desire to secure a First-Strike Nuclear Capability.
04 January, 2010, 23:08
Funny you don't mention the help he got by passing security so he could get on board. Or the fact he did not have a passport. Or the fact his father alerted American authorities out of concern for what his son might do. Or the other man who was "detained" after the plane landed when a bomb dog alerted security. Or the fact the FBI and other American security apparatus continues to lie about the events of that day. Watch and listen to interviews of passenger Kurt Haskell (just google) it) and you may get an inkling of what the real deal is. In other news, all terrorists are not Muslim. Just ask one of the millions of Iraqis who lost family members due to the aggressive and illegal war Americans launched against the Iraqi people. Or the latest victims of America in Afghanistan. Or the Palestinians who are daily terrorized by Israel. Or Chechnya whose country has been destroyed and terrorized into submission by Russia.
The list goes on, because the lies do. And I'm sure the Racketeers love you for reinforcing the falsehoods.

I have to agree 100% with your outline for stopping this load of guana from continuing. The military should ABSOLUTELY be in control of Homeland Security, not some life long politician whose only training for the job comes from running a hardcore negative political campaign. As for the Air Marshalls, didn't they actually *have* two Marshalls per flight following 9-11? Adding a bomb dog would be a bonus, one that anyone who flys regularly would appreciate. Srew the profit margins how will the airlines feel when nobody will fly anymore due to the insane amount of fatal risk it involves because of these maniacs? Eating the cost of two + seats per flight is a minor thing compaired to stopping the whole plane from being turned into a flying deathtrap!
Onto profiling...it is a shame to punish the majority of peaceful Muslims for the actions of the insane few. But until they can control their own, they must submit to the intense interrogation and indignities that will be suffered so that these sub humans who feel that blowing up civilians is a viable act of war can be stopped dead in their tracks. During WWII, the Japanese in America were detained in camps almost immediately following Pearl Harbor...more often than not, these people were American citizens who had nothing in their adgenda but to live the American Dream, but because of the few that were actually there to foster an internal war against the US, the actions were considered justifiable in a time of full on war. I'm not saying we should lock all Muslims in concentration camps, but by profiling the very group that has declared war on Western civilization, we would be able to stop many of these gutless attacks before they even get to the airport terminals. The minor loss of civil liberties for one group, which in the long run merely amounts to those of the Muslim faith answering a few questions before boarding an airplane (horror of horrors!) is truly the only way to single out and either stop or hopefully apprehend these fundamentalist freaks in the act and either lock them up until they die, or kill them off outright, like the vermin they are.
Now, I'm all for giving people the benefit of the doubt, and not blaming the multitudes for the actions of a few. But when those few are causing so much pain, death and damage and are still free to wander about and perpetrate their crimes of extreme hatred and ignorance, we in the civilized world need to take decisive action and stop them. If this means pissing off a few billion Muslim fathful for a few years until they can prove they can control the radical members of their faith, then too bad for them. It's time for the Muslim faith to prove to the world just how much they truly love peace...stop your own from these sensless killings in the name of Ahllah, and all will be forgiven. Until then, we are at war, so don't complain if we pull you and your family aside at the airport and search you for explosives...you all fit the profile, my friends!
02 January, 2010, 15:30
Gina, what a dead-on (no pun) comment regarding airport security being as organized as the air-traffic control system. The US and Europe might take a cue from Tel Aviv and their successful super organized security program...Thomas, I feel your pain. Most of the politicians are simply power hungry and have almost no idea of what it means to fight a war or, in any case, be placed in a position where they must stop a terrorist attack on a commercial airliner by resorting to what amounts to hand-to-hand combat...And what's next? A military show-down with Iran? Quite obviously something needs to be done there to stop nuclear proliferation and it needs to happen soon.

As a veteran of both the Afghan and Iraq wars I agree. These people are not Muslims, Christians, Jews, or Buddist, they are bastards, evil, underhanded, and lower than a snake. Anyone that plans to bring down a civilian airliner of any country is nothing more than a snake in the grass. The issues you speak of in your article is about MONEY, MONEY, MONEY and more MONEY. The polticians are inept idiots that will say anything to get elected, Republicans and Democrats make no difference they are all the same. They argue about how the fire started until the house burns to the ground, and then call the fire department. Do you know why there are no airport screening of the type you described i.e. back-scatter x-ray scanning, Air Marshalls, and Dogs at airports in the United States..Politics and MONEY!!! The American people are so damn stupid trusting their government leaders, don't trust any of them, I sure as hell don't...they will tell you anything but the truth. I got screwed by the very people that was to supposed to help me save my home. I lost my home and everything worked for to foreclosure while I was serving overseas, who cares about that...no one, why?? Its all about MONEY, Wall St.and Washington DC. not people. I could care less what happens to Umar Abdolmutallab he is a SNAKE, in my opinion he should be locked in the deepest darkest hole in a Ferderal Prison somewhere in the middle of Oklahoma, no visitors, no outside communication of any kind, no television, no newspapers, no letters, NO KORAN, and be left to never see the light of day again, at least he has a bed to call his own, clean sheets, and 3 meals a day, that is all he deserves nothing more. The US Government does not want to protect you....don't you get it, they need Al Qaeda we created Al Qaeda trained and armed them....to keep this system fear and control alive. You can bet if the Politicans were forced to fly commerical airliners changes would be made damn FAST!!! It strikes me funny that the leaders of Al Qaeda are not the ones boarding airplanes to fulfill their beliefs..they always send someone else to do their bidding, some privileged kid from some bullshit well to do family...ever wonder why that is.??? What sick a joke! I used to have strong patriotic beliefs and put my life on the line on the battlefield for them and I did.....no longer...SCREW THEM ALL!!! People are blown to pieces all over the world everyday, it only makes headlines when is over the US on a US airline. WHO CARES!!!
01 January, 2010, 15:41
Hopefully, with many of the other things you mention to help the terrorist attacks, such as full body scans, etc, we won't have to resort to racial profiling. We pride our nation on freedom and inclusion and we grow closer to compromising that. This could lead to racially motivated crimes and even internment camps. If we could just be as organized as the air traffic controllers are, and be able to get all the pieces to fit together and track these folks. I think all the other ideas make sense, let's start there...
