Messi gets UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award

Barcelona's Lionel Messi has received the Best Player of 2008-2009 Champions League accolade, as voted by rival coaches.

On Thursday, the Argentinian forward was named following a vote by the coaches of the 15 other teams who reached the knockout rounds of the tournament.

”It is an enormous joy to be able to receive such an important award as this,” Messi said before adding:

”And it's also a pleasure to be able to thank all the people who voted for me and who decided I should get this award.”

Messi contributed nine goals as Barcelona marched to the major European title in style. His latest one was a 70th-minute header in the final to seal a 2-0 win against Manchester United.

Messi was also voted best forward, while his teammate Xavi Hernandez was named the best midfield player at the draw ceremony for this season's competition.
