Brazil thrash Argentina for World Cup qualification

Five-time world champions Brazil have qualified for South Africa 2010 after crushing bitter rivals Argentina 3-1 away in Rosario.

The hosts received their first blow 24 minutes in when Brazilian defender Luisao, completely unmarked in the box, calmly headed it in past Argentine keeper Mariano Andujar thanks to an Elano free-kick.

Just six minutes later, Diego Maradona’s men were once again punished for rude play. Kaka received the ball after another Elano free-kick and created a great chance for Gilberto Silva. Andujar saved the ball, but it rebounded to Luis Fabiano, who had no problem shooting into an open corner, 2-0.

Argentina got one back after the break thanks to a long range effort from Jesus Datolo at the 65 minute mark, but all the hopes of the home crowd were shattered two minutes later, when Kaka delivered a wonderfully-weighted pass to Luis Fabiano, who chipped the ball over Andujar for his second goal of the match.

“It's tremendously satisfying to qualify like this, but for me it's even more satisfying to finish off a good job well done. Ever since we took over we've been trying to get across what it means to play for the national side, to make our players, who are all stars with their club sides, become workers out on the pitch,” Dunga, Brazilian boss, told FIFA.com.

Brazil, who have never missed a World Cup, have qualified for South Africa 2010. Dunga’s men top the South American qualifying group with 30 points after 15 matches.

Diego Maradona now finds himself in a difficult position as Argentina sit fourth, with 22 points and three games left to play, while Colombia and Ecuador are on their heels with 20 points each.

The top four South American teams will qualify for the FIFA World Cup, and the fifth placed team enters a home-and-away playoff with the fourth placed team from North, Central America and the Caribbean.
