UN troops enter Haiti’s slum

Published 10 February, 2007, 00:02

Hundreds of UN peacekeepers have raided Haiti's largest slum to arrest gang members and take control of the area. The move sparked a gunfight which left one person dead and several others, including two peacekeepers, wounded.

Up to 700 UN peacekeepers entered Cite Soleil, a coastal area of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince.

They were aiming to secure a school used by gang members as a base and weapons store.

There have been regular incursions into Cite Soleil in attempts to reduce violence in Haiti
