Floods in Russia’s Far East

Published 25 July, 2007, 10:43

Rescue workers have arrived in Russia's Far Eastern Zey district to tackle the aftermath of flooding. A state of emergency was announced after the floods swept through the district – 60 homes are underwater.

More than 400 people have been moved and thousands more are expected to follow. Emergency services have set up over 22 tent camps to accommodate them.

Ministry of Emergencies’ officials say water levels have begun to recede.

“The water level drastically increased and then it dropped by about 1 centimetre. The forecast for now is that it will continue to go down as it still remains pretty high,” said Viktor Bukhta from the local Emergencies Ministry.
