Russian pensioners to get $US 1.5 billion windfall

Published 19 October, 2007, 08:27

The Russian President has already begun implementing some of the promises he made during the annual Q & A session which took place on Thursday. This morning he signed a decree authorising the payment of pensions that the government failed to pay in the mid-90's.

From 1995 to 1998 military pensioners missed out on payments due to the readjustment of monetary allowances.

Now they're going to get the money owed to them, and it will be indexed in accordance with current market prices.

It's expected to cost the Russian government some 40 billion roubles – that's about $US 1.5 billion.
