$120 watch for Russia’s president

Russia’s tech-heads found something to talk about when the Dmitry Medvedev was seen wearing a weird technical device on his wrist during a presidential charity visit to an Orthodox boarding school in Moscow region.

Internet-users immediately identified the device as a Chinese Mobile Watch Phone (MWP) – a GSM-compatible gadget with a 1.4-inch touch-screen, built-in media player, FM-radio receiver, Bluetooth and GPRS-support.

It is on sale via the web with a cost of about $120.

The web-community is still scratching its head about why Medvedev would want a MWP. After all, he can hardly use it as a cell phone for security reasons. However, it is in line with his image as a modern technocratic politician, one who has his very own video blog.

In this respect Medvedev is like another convinced Apple-user, U.S. President-elect Barack Obama, who is set to become the first American president to bring a laptop into the Oval Office.

Obama is also reported to be a ‘BlackBerry addict’, used to checking his e-mail 24/7.

But that’s a habit he will probably have to give up for security reasons after begin sworn into office on January 20. After that date, all his correspondence as President enters the public domain, which effectively renders exchanging frequent e-mails impossible.
