Arsenal star Andrey Arshavin was named the Player of the Month in the English Premier League, while Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson took the honors as best coach, Premierleague.com reports.
The Russian midfielder scored a sensational four goals in his club’s 4-4 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, and was one of the key figures on the field in Arsenal’s other matches in April – against Wigan, Manchester City, and Middlesbrough.
Premier League officials, journalists, and fans agreed that it was the Russian playmaker’s brilliant performance that allowed the Gunners to cement their position in the league’s top four, and get a chance to play in the Champions League next year.
Arshavin is only the second Russian to take the award. Man United’s Andrey Kanchelskis won it back in 1996.
The Russian playmaker was also named the best player of the month by the Arsenal fans.
Arshavin congratulates WW2 veterans
Andrey Arshavin was given the award on a very special day for every Russian – May 9, when the country celebrates Victory Day. Despite his busy schedule (Arsenal plays Chelsea on Sunday), Arshavin found time to congratulate the Russian World War II veterans.
"Dear veterans, I congratulate you on Victory Day! Thank you all for your great feat and for your courage! It is because of you we all now have a chance to live. It is sad that today I am compelled to violate the tradition established over the years, and won’t visit the Piskarevskoe cemetery on the Day of Victory. A low bow to all those, who defended their homeland in those difficult days!" read the statement on the player's official site.
