Fifty years since Nikita Khrushchev's ‘corny’ visit to the state of Iowa Viktor Sukhodrev, personal interpreter to the Soviet leader, recalls this landmark trip both in terms of politics and agriculture.

What happened in August 1959 stoked the Soviet leader's love-affair with corn, which resulted in the crop being grown all over the USSR.
