Russia’s best rookie Shchennikov surprised by award

While the Russian football season ended a few weeks ago, people are still talking about the debut of one youngster – Georgy Shchennikov from CSKA Moscow.

Shchennikov didn't have a lot of rivals for the season's top newcomer award this year, but it didn’t make the prize from the Youth Football League any less honorable.

However, it was quite a surprise for the Armymen player himself.

“To be honest, I didn't expect so much attention. I think my team did well this season, but my impact was quite small. I didn't start all the games and still have a lot to do to become a first-team player,” Georgy Shchennikov said modestly.

The Muscovite was in fact busy this year, making 25 appearances in the Premier League, adding six Champions League matches to his account.

The 18-year-old swung between left full-back and hugging the same touchline in midfield on occasion.

Indeed, according to some reports, he was even considered by Guus Hiddink for a place in the national squad, but CSKA's head coach Leonid Slutsky thinks the youngster still has a lot to learn.

“I think everyone, as well as Georgy, understands the chief trials for him are still ahead. There is no secret that it is the second season which is usually the toughest for a young player. So we have to wait and see how he will cope with the pressure,” Leonid Slutsky said.

With Alan Dzagoev having been named the top newcomer last season, CSKA are becoming famous for raising young stars.

If CSKA keep churning out at the same rate, there is little doubt this year's Champions League's play-off spot will be far from being their biggest achievement.
