Michael Schumacher will return to Formula 1 having agreed to a one-year deal with rookies from Mercedes in 2010.

The German team confirmed that the contract was signed on Wednesday.

According to Bild newspaper, the seven-time world champion will earn around £7 million with the former Brawn team, where he will take the place of 2009 champion Jenson Button, who left for McLaren.

The Red Baron’s first test drives with Mercedes are scheduled for January next year. His partner will be fellow German Nico Rosberg.

“Three years of absence [he retired after 2006 season] gave me back all the energy that I am feeling right now. I feel ready for some serious stuff,” AP news agency cites Schumacher.

And by serious stuff he means nothing less than an eighth F1 crown.

The forty-year-old racing legend Schumacher could have returned to the sport earlier, but his brief comeback as a substitution for injured Ferrari driver Felipe Massa was cancelled due to a neck problem.

“There is no further issue with the neck. I believe I can be absolutely competitive,” Schumacher commented.

The 2010 Formula 1 season kicks off March 14 in Bahrain.
