IBF heavyweight Champion Wladimir Klitschko will fight Nigerian boxer Samuel Peter on September 11 in Frankfurt, Germany, with the sides announcing they had signed a deal on Friday.
The fight will become a rematch, as the fighters have already met in the ring. Back in 2005, Peter knocked down the younger of the Klitschko brothers three times, but lost on points in the end.
“Klitschko knows who won that fight. This time I am going straight in and take him out. It’s not going to last real long,” Fightnews.com cited Peter.
Peter’s chief trainer Abel Sanchez shares his optimism about the future bout.
“Boxing has been searching for real excitement in the heavyweight division. Sam Peter will be that excitement. We’re going there to take out Klitschko, like real early,” he said.
29-year-old Peter has a record of 34 wins (27 knockouts) and three losses. The boxer, nicknamed “The Nigerian Nightmare”, is a former WBC heavyweight world champion.
Peter is No. 2 in the IBF rankings, but Klitschko’s bout with mandatory challenger Aleksandr Povetkin of Russia was called off due to the sides being unable to agree on the contract.
IBF and WBO champion Wladimir Klitschko is 34 years old. His record is 54 wins (48 KOs) and three defeats. The Ukrainian last appeared in the ring on March 20, knocking out US rival Eddie Chambers.
