Paula Slier reports for RT from the Middle East and the Balkans.

She has been with the channel since it’s inception in 2005. Since then she’s covered three wars, fulfilling her passion to be in the firing line of journalism.Paula filed reports from both Israel and Lebanon during the conflict in 2006; she did the same two-and-a-half years later during the Israel-Gaza war. Paula was one of the few correspondents working for Russian TV to report from Tbilisi during the South Ossetian conflict; and she spent several months in Kosovo covering the Serb reaction to Kosovo’s declaration of independence. She covered the arrest and extradition of wartime Serb leader Radovan Karadzic from Serbia and was one of the few foreign journalists to be granted interviews with his daughter and brother.“If you would’ve told me years ago that one day I, as a South African, would be based in the Middle East, working for Russian television, in English, I would’ve thought you were mad,” she chuckles.

“But it’s been a priviledge to be on the cutting edge of news in such exciting times, and working for a channel enthused with young energy and a dedication to the profession.”Paula has filed a number of exclusive interviews for RT, including Israeli president, Shimon Peres, Lebanese president Emile Lahoud, Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniye, and South African president Jacob Zuma. She’s also interviewed the prime minister of the Republika Srpska, Milorad Dodik, the deputy prime minister of Kosovo, Hajredin Kuci, the former foreign minister of the Soviet Union Eduard Shevarnadzе and more than a dozen foreign ministers, among them Hamas and Israel. Her most memorable time working for RT was when she was doing a live report from the Israel-Gaza border and a Qassam missile exploded a few metres behind her while she was live on air. She never blinked an eyelid. Before joining RT, Paula was a news anchor and senior reporter with the South African Broadcasting Corporation. She grew up in South Africa and holds an honours degree in journalism from the University of the Witwatersrand. She’s fluent in English and Afrikaans.
