­Ivan Turgenev was a novelist, poet and playwright known for his detailed descriptions of everyday life in 19th century Russia.

Although Turgenev was overshadowed by his contemporaries, Fyodor Dostoevsky and Leo Tolstoy, he remains a major figure of 19th century Russian literature.
