Mikhail Bulgakov

Mikhail Bulgakov was a Russian journalist, playwright, novelist, and short story writer.

He is most famous for his fantasy novel “The Master and Margarita”, a story unfolding in Stalinist Moscow which is visited by the Devil. The book is considered a major Russian novel of the 20th century.

Once a favorite of Stalin, he eventually fell out of favor with the leader, and his works were more or less banned for decades. However, Bulgakov himself was spared imprisonment and death in the gulag, unlike many of his contemporary colleagues.
