The building was opened on October 20, 1880, consructed for the Albert Salamonsky Circus. They say that Salamonsky put the first ruble earned by the circus in a frame and hung it on the wall. In 1919 the former Salamonsky Circus became the country’s first state circus. In 1941-1945, during the Great Patriotic War, the circus didn’t stop working. In its shows it mocked the “fascist war dogs,” and a real tank was used on the stage to “destroy” the “enemy troops.”
