Novodevichy Convent, also known as Bogoroditse-Smolensky (Holy Mother of Smolensk) Convent is probably the best-known cloister in Moscow. Its name, sometimes translated as the New Maidens' Nunnery, was devised to differentiate from an ancient maidens' convent that was located in the Moscow Kremlin. Unlike other cloisters in the Russian capital, it has remained virtually intact since the 17th century. In 2004, Novodevichy Convent was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site and now partially hosts the Moscow History Museum.
