What is now a beautiful square, in the 15th and 16th centuries was a swept space around the town walls. The walls were surrounded by a defensive trench with draw bridges. As the square was located not far from the Moskva River and the Kremlin walls, it was called Torg (“trade”) Square for some time. After the fire of 1571 it started to be called Pozhar (“fire”). In the 17th century remarkable buildings were erected – Kazansky Sobor and Spasskaya Tower; this is when the square got its present name because Krasnaya (“red”) also means “beautiful” in Russian.
