Anya Fedorova

At an early stage in my life, I have discovered the beauty of contrast. Living between Moscow and Canberra, switching between Russian and English, I developed a certain positive curiosity for life, people, especially characters. Here in my blog, I'd like to share my love for the city where I was born and now live. As an artist, I am invigorated by other people's work, energy, and talent. So please join me in my day-to-day quest in seeking inspiration.

I woke up in an oven

Or a chimney, or a fireplace, or anything that reeks of smoke. Now, I'm a pro sleeper. After years of night shifts (the glamour of telly!), I can handle pretty much any sleeping conditions. But this smoky situation is too much. Click to enlarge Bonjour tristesse! It's Monday morning and I feel hungover for no reason. Thank you bog fires! Anyway, at 8am I indulged in a bit of photography with...

Miss Utopia, I miss you

Watching a lot of 70s Soviet films lately. Regaining my identity in a way. I love the space age music and the fashion is absolutely amazing. It's cute that math, science and physics geeks were rock stars of the age. Sexy academics. Click to enlarge But what excites me most is looking at Moscow of that time. Oh I miss it. Scruffy, it had the allure of an unkempt woman. Happy and lost in her...

“Twenty-Ten-Zero and She’s off!”

Hello world! So busy these days. Is that still a legit otmazka (Evasion, excuse, fake excuse – all of that is “otmazka” in Russian)? Is “so busy these days” an otmazka in English? I don’t know. No update for almost half a year… bless our internet department – the kind, wonderful people that they are for not deleting my blog. A lot has happened....

Tomorrow is another day

Well well. Look at me updating every day! As promised in my last post, here’s a digest of what excited me in the week to come: Afisha picnic On Saturday if I wake up early enough (I doubt it) after going out with fabulous Martyn A. of “Moscow Out” this Friday, I will be in Kolomenskoe sending my love to Mujuice at the Cut2Kill performance. But probably I’ll turn up just...

Out with the negative

Going absolutely mad on night shifts. Nausea and wretched sleep is making me moody. So beware, world, we've got another angry girl with opinions on opinions. Lately I’ve turned an evil eye on hipsters- a vast group of youngsters balancing between ultra-fashionable and oh-so-last-season. I even drew a beautiful picture to illustrate my annoyance. The funny thing is that honestly speaking I...

Fixed gear

Hate myself for being so lazy with this blog. Tempted to make a New Year's resolution: ‘I promise to regularly update my blog’. Fancy a midsummer New Year's party to celebrate that? Anyway, I was meant to write about glamour in Moscow. But then got terribly bored even thinking about it. No need to dwell upon this. Glamour is a post-Soviet craze for everything shiny and pretty. It's...

Impressionism or a blurry view

It's raining in Moscow. Keep in mind she's no eye-candy even in the sunshine, the rain makes the old hag look desperate. She's no longer "Moskva Zlatoglavaya" (gold-domed Moscow, called that for the numerous orthodox churches showing off their golden domes in sunny weather). No. Now she's gray, dull and well... looks her age- 862. Anyways, this glum palette sets me into a very Katy...

Ah! It's been a while

I was away on a well-deserved holiday and then worked very hard but finally I made it back online. As I'm focusing on the arts side of life at the moment, I've been quite productive and I'll show you what I came up with myself, as well as some sources of inspiration. Meanwhile, I made a mid-year resolution to use up all my art supplies until next July. Here's a sneak peak about what I'm talking...

Animal cruelty

Voice of concern time. We recently ran a story about stray dogs. There are apparently 30,000 of the poor things on Moscow’s streets. Here’s the story itself if you missed it, mind though that it’s quite a disturbing sight. download embed Anyhow, I had the chance to speak to Darya Taraskina, president of the charity animal rights fund BIM and she blames unreasonable breeding for...

Faces&laces

Here are a few snapshots from Jabagh's opening soiree (see previous post). A total success by the way and definitely not because of all that free vodka. M'ars gallery is lovely. Great location, nice venue, exciting shows. Here's Jabagh hugging away with renowned Russian artists Oleg Kulik and Konstantin Khudyakov. Paris Porn Police - nothing to do with the infamous heiress. It's a story from...
