Chekhov short stories sell for $16,000 in NY

A first edition of Anton Checkov’s short stories has been auction by Bonhams in New York for $16,250.

­The first edition of Chekhov's second collection of short stories called ‘In the Twilight’ was estimated at $12,000-$18,000. The rare book was published in 1887 in St. Petersburg and is inscribed to the actor and writer Pavel Svabodin, the writer’s close friend.

Other lots in the sale of Russian Literature featured a handwritten poem by Aleksandr Blok. The signed manuscript of the poem, "I pozdno i temno. Pokinu bez zhelanii…" [It's late and dark. I will leave without regrets…], written in pencil on the inside back wrapper of Sergei Rachmaninov's Moments musicaux pour piano, dated February 27, 1916 sold for $10,625.

An edition of ‘Coats of Arms of the Provinces and Regions of the Russian Empire’ dated 1880 became the top-selling lot. It sold for $21,250.
The auction house did not reveal the names of the new owners.
