Topless members of the feminist movement Femen stole the show on the red carpet at the opening ceremony of the Berlin film festival, there to protest against female circumcision.
Unlike glamorous actresses the Ukrainian women's rights activists wore nothing but old blue jeans, with political slogans scrawled over their naked breasts.
The topless protesters turned up nearly at the same time as another activist, the 75-year-old Hollywood icon Jane Fonda.
Wasting no time, one of the feminists scaled the barriers separating the stars from the star gazers to throw herself in front of the cameras.
The security guards proved to be equally as agile and only gave the activists time to shout that ‘one girl is circumcised every 19 minutes’, before being bundled away. However the burly bouncers did have a smile on their faces while the women were escorted into police cars.
Earlier this year Femen activists staged a topless protest at the Vatican’s St Peter’s Square, to support gay rights as the Pope was reading his blessing.
The FEMEN group has recently opened new headquarter in Paris, and promises to open offices in New York, Montreal and Sao Paulo.
The organization was founded in Ukraine in 2008 to attract attention to women’s rights. Since then it has become famous for its signature topless protests. The group has started recruiting international members in the French capital. Some of them already took part in a Louvre Museum protest last year.
