Was it deliberate – or just coincidence? Was it a political move? The creators of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones have caused a scandal by featuring a George W. Bush lookalike in several episodes of the show… beheaded.
A head suspiciously like that of the former US president appeared on a wooden spike in episode 10 of the first season. Comments like “people may not have noticed this but back up…the last head on the left is George Bush,” began to flood the internet. Bush is perhaps not immediately recognizable as the face appears in profile, covered with long dirty hair.
The buzz reached executives of the Republican party, who rushed to condemn the series’ creators and call for the show to be boycotted.
Authors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, as well as HBO have already presented apologies. Benioff and Weiss insisted the incident wasn’t a political statement – they say they just used images they had at hand, and had failed to recognize that one of them looked like George W. Bush.
“We made this clear to the executive producers of the series who apologized immediately for this inadvertent careless mistake. We are sorry this happened and will have it removed from any future DVD production,” the Daily Mail quotes the HBO’s statement.
Brooklyn Republican Party chairman Craig Eaton had outraged words about the offending head, the Daily Mail reports.
“I think that it's despicable. As a country, Democrats, Republicans, we have to have respect for the office and the individuals,” Craig Eaton told The Daily Mail.
