Moscow’s Winzavod is presenting the next major photo project, which is dedicated to Soviet snaps from the 20th century.

Shots taken by the best Soviet press photographers reveal the chronicles of the state’s life and point out the milestone events in its history.

The display “Symbols of the epoch. Our history. 1920 – 1991” opening at Winzavod on Tuesday features 140 photographic monuments to the military victories and defeats, celebratory processions, sports and scientific achievements, key politicians and cultural figures.

The exhibition represents the classics of Soviet photojournalism and many legendary shots, including the famous “Star kiss” taken by Leonid Velikzhanin featuring Yury Gagarin being kissed by Gina Lollobrigida.

For example, Pyotr Otsup, known for his shots of Vladimir Lenin and who shot the last picture of the Russian Imperial family, is rightfully considered the founder of photojournalism in the Soviet Union. Evgeny Khaldey recorded the whole Great Patriotic War with his camera. His photographs from the “Victory Flag over the Reichstag” series are also part of the display. Vladimir Musaleyan is the best-known photographer of the Brezhnev era. His works featuring the leader of the Soviet Union are also part of the display.

It is the first time that such a full collection of press photographers of the Soviet news agency TASS (the majority of photographs of the exhibition were taken by photo journalists of this news agency) is represented in one project. However this is only the first of four exhibitions of the major project “20th century’s Chronicle in photographs” – the remainder of which are yet to come.

The “Symbols of the epoch” display starts on March 30 through to April 25.
