Linoleum is commonly known as durable floor covering. It is also the quirky name of a Russian festival of animated film, to be held in Moscow for the fifth time.

The Linoleum festival highlights animation talent from over twenty countries, including works from recognized artists, such as the UK’s award-winning Kate Jessop.

It also has creations by unknown, promising animators.

The main idea behind the festival at the Pioneer cinema is to establish animation as part of contemporary art as well as to promote smart animation.

Over a hundred films from around the world will be screened at the festival, which runs in the Russian capital from October 28-31.

Participants of the official competition will battle it out for a modest prize of US$5,000. The alternative strands of the competition will mostly feature works by students of California Institute of the Arts.

Among the most highly-anticipated world premieres is Ato-Mick, from Good Company Arts in New Zealand.
