The 62nd edition of the Cannes Film Festival will kick off with the highly anticipated world premiere of an animation film from the Disney Pixar studios.

“Up” is a comedy adventure from the Oscar-nominated director Pete Docter, author of “Monsters, Inc.”

His new animation film features a 78-year-old balloon salesman, Carl Fredricksen, who is just about to make his lifelong dream come true. He ties thousands of balloons to his house and is already on his way to South America when Carl realizes he is not alone. His uninvited guest and bound companion is 70 years younger than him… Meet the wilderness explorer, Russel!

It’s the first time in the history of Cannes that a digital 3-D animation film will open the world’s most prestigious film festival.

The world premiere of “Up” on the French Riviera is scheduled for May 13.

Films from around the world will be competing for the coveted Golden Palm award from May 13 to 24 2009.

The President of the Jury this year is celebrated French actress Isabelle Huppert.
