The 13th Art Moscow - one of the most popular fairs for contemporary art in Russia, which gathers together experts and fans from every corner of the globe, kicked off in Moscow’s Central House of the Artist.

The fair traditionally presents a wide-range of exhibits and an educational program, providing a platform for the creation of cultural and commercial ideas. However, the economic crisis has also affected the Art Moscow fair and, this year it is being held in September, instead of the traditional May, as a consequence of the general financial situation.

Thus, many of the foreign galleries which planned to take part in the fair refused to bring their collections.

Artist Gosha Ostretsov will participate in Art Moscow for the third time, developing a project she calls “Fast Art”.

“There is free space left [in the venue] not occupied by the galleries. Then the organizers call me, we will come and occupy these spaces to show the freedom of art,” the artist told Kultura TV channel. It has placed his paintings in the corner near the elevator. “It stands on mops – adapted to Russian conditions,” Ostretsov added.

The organizers say they’ve decided to put off Art Moscow until September so it coincides with the Third Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art, which opened on Thursday, in order to unite two major capital’s art events and acquaint people with the best samples of modern art.

Still, there’s much to see at the expo, as many respectable Russian galleries will show their collections of contemporary art to visitors.

“Art Books” section will present the publishing houses specializing in the literature of art, design and architecture.

The fair will continue in the Central House of Artists through September 27.
