“Maestro” generally means “master” in Italian. But a single word can get an array of additional meanings once it becomes the title of an international arts festival.
According to an online Tuscan source Painforma.it, “M” stands for music, “A” for art, “E” for eternity, “S” for symphony, “T” for triumph, “R” for Renaissance, and “O” for Ovation.
But in a nutshell, the newly-born “Maestro” festival suggests plunging into the culture of Russia without leaving Italy.
The art gathering celebrates all the best in the world of Russian music, literature, animation art and cinema. It features a rich program of classical music concerts performed by soloists from the Bolshoi Theatre, as well as funky jazz gigs by cutting-edge artists.
A special event will be dedicated to one of Russia’s greatest filmmakers Andrey Tarkovsky, who once worked in Italy with celebrated Italian playwright Tonino Guerra.
The inaugural festival will take place in the sea town of Forte dei Marmi (Fort of the Marbles) in northern Tuscany.
The week-long festival will run until August 27.
