“A Sleigh Ride”, an oil painting by the renowned Russian artist Filipp Maliavin, brought $851,394 at Christie’s London sales on December 2.
Born into a poor peasant family, Malyavin left the Soviet Union for Paris. However, the vibrant peasant life has continued to inspire him throughout his life.
Another Russian artist whose works rarely fail to find a buyer is Zinaida Serebriakova. Her “Portrait of Marietta Frangopulo”, dated 1922, fetched $337,842 – almost seven times as much as the low estimate at Christies Russian art sales on Tuesday.
According to insiders, the spending capacity of those who are fond of Russian art is growing. Usually, these are people who studied or were brought up in an environment where the Russian language was used.
