“The Taking of Christ” by Caravaggio
A Caravaggio masterpiece, “The Taking of Christ” (also known as “Judas’ Kiss”), which was stolen from a Ukrainian museum several years ago, has allegedly been found at a Moscow online auction.
Director of the Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art was quoted as saying he received an anonymous letter, suggesting that he should look for the stolen piece at an Internet auction.
Vladimir Ostrovsky told the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency (UNIAN) that he “got frightened” when he saw a photo of “The Taking of Christ”, as well as an announcement saying that it was on sale for a mere $2 million.
According to Ostrovsky, the price is ridiculous. Art experts estimate the Caravaggio piece to be around $100 million.
Ostrovsky said that, although he was unsure whether it is the stolen item in question or just a replica, he immediately informed the Ukrainian law-enforcement authorities about it.
The Odessa Museum of Western and Eastern Art suffered a robbery back in August 2008, when a thief allegedly got into the museum through the window, snatched the Caravaggio piece from its frame, and escaped the building via the roof.
