One of the world’s leading modern art lovers, Francois Pinault, will exhibit a selection of his collection in Moscow from March 20th.
73-year-old Pinault, who owns the Christie’s auction house, has an outstanding private collection of more than 2,000 pieces. The exhibition of 49 of them is titled ‘A certain state of the world: A selection from the collection of Francois Pinault’.
Curator Caroline Bourgeois says, “the first two parts of the exhibition touch upon themes of war, humanity, and also questions of idleness in society”. She describes modern art from Russia as “quite aggressive” which is why she “decided to start the exhibition with war”.
The third part unveils works from artists from different continents, representing the world as a whole. A total of 32 renowned artists from 15 countries will be on display.
Although just a fraction of Pinault’s massive collection will be shown, the Vedomosti Business Daily says “there has never been such an ambitious demonstration of modern art in Moscow yet”.
Garage venue
The Garage Centre for Contemporary Culture opened in September, 2008. It is located in one of Russia’s architectural monuments, the former Bakhmetevsky bus garage designed in 1926 by Konstantin Melnikov.
ArtReview magazine twice named Francois Pinault as “the most influential person in the modern art”. But there have been many more strings to his bow, having previously owned a football club, a theatre in Paris, the Chateau Latour castle and vineyard and a magazine.
