The popular Cirque du Soleil is planning to establish a permanent platform for their shows in the Russian capital, just like in Tokyo, Las Vegas and many European cities.
The famous Canadian project, known for its “dramatic mix of circus arts and street entertainment,” is going to start its two-month tour in Moscow on October 23. But the plans of the company in Russia go beyond this tour. According to Natalia Romanova, the general director of Cirque du Soleil in Russia, they have “a strategic program of promoting Cirque du Soleil in the Russian market.”
Romanova told the RIA Novosti news agency that next year they plan to go on tour in both Moscow and St. Petersburg, and probably another Russian city. Plans of creating in Moscow a permanently operating show are also being actively discussed.
“The concept of an original show developed especially for Russia has been already presented to Moscow’s mayor in December of last year,” Romanova said.
Much remains, however, in order for these ambitious plans to be realized. Investors need to be attracted to the project, and the question about a platform for the shows needs to be solved.
Cirque du Soleil was established in 1984 by Canadians Guy Laliberté and Daniel Gauthier in Montreal. This unusual circus created a new genre which combines theater, choreography, acrobatics and music. Their charming performances look equally fabulous under the circus tent and in a theater. Each show is a synthesis of styles from around the world, concentrated around a central theme. Acting to live music, the performers capture the audience’s attention from the beginning to the very end.
The company totals more than 4,000 people in different troupes, which allows for holding performances in several places around the world simultaneously.
Animals have been never involved in the performances of Cirque du Soleil, which is a principled position of the company actively supported by Greenpeace.
At the end of October the troupe from Cirque du Soleil will come to Moscow with their Varekai program, created in 2002 by director Dominic Champagne. The show has toured 45 cities worldwide since its premiere.
