Moscow is giving a chance to peek into what fashion was like behind the Iron Curtain. Soviet celebs’ wardrobes on display will how the cream of society was dressed in the USSR.

Soviet fashion developed very unnaturally and was tightly connected with the evolution of fashion in the West. Despite being one of the most closed states in the world, even the Soviet Union had its own dandies and style icons on the screen and on stage, sometimes looking kitschy and sometimes outshining the Western stars.

Over a thousand exhibits including costumes, shoes, accessories, Soviet perfume samples, pictures from magazines and photographs of Soviet celebrities were gathered from state museums and private collections.

Through personal belongings of ballerinas Galina Ulanova and Maya Plisetskaya, actresses Klara Luchko and Ludmila Gurchenko and many other stars, the display shows the development of Soviet fashion from the 1920s to 1990s.

The exhibition comes as part of a major project on the history of Russian costume from Catherine the Great to the present time, which was launched seven years ago. To see the Fashion Behind the Iron curtain display, visit Tsaritsyno in Moscow before June 12.
