Joseph Brodsky
A large-scale art festival dedicated to the Nobel-prize winning Russian poet Joseph Brodsky will be held in his native St. Petersburg for the first time ever.
Artists, musicians, and actors from Russia and overseas will read and perform Brodksy’s poems and essays, which he wrote in Russian and English.
The festival kicks off by celebrating Brodsky’s birthday with his admirers. On May 24, one of Russia’s most powerful poets who died in New York from a heart attack would have turned 69 years old.
Brodsky was exiled from the Soviet Union in 1972 and lived in America until his death.
The poet was quoted as saying that he spent his first salary in America on a ticket to Venice, which immediately became his favorite place in the world. In his will, Brodsky instructed his family to bury him there, in San. Michele cemetery.
Earlier this week, a memorial plaque designed by sculptor Georgy Frangulyan in honor of the great poet, also came to be unveiled in the ‘city of lovers’.
Another monument to Brodsky is soon to be erected in Moscow, opposite the American embassy.
