Russian cinema art professionals have received the Order of Arts and Letters, for their contribution to the promotion of French arts and literature, from the French Culture Minister on Wednesday.

The Order of Arts and Letters was founded in 1957. Within half a century, many Russians have accepted this prestigious award. This time the French award went to directors Gleb Panfilov and Pavel Lungin, cinema historian Naum Kleiman, ballerina Svetlana Zakharova and actress Inna Churikova.

"It is a rare award, it is a higher step. I am happy that [the French] gave it to me, remembered about me. It is an appreciation of what you do, but it does not dismiss the necessity of soul searching – the critical aspect of yourself," director Pavel Lungin said after the ceremony.

The awards ceremony was held at the French ambassador’s residence in Moscow. Frederic Mitterrand, Culture Minister of France handed over the awards.
