British actor and comedian Stephen Fry, famed for his portrayal of Oscar Wilde, has voiced outrage over a law adopted in St Petersburg banning the promotion of gay lifestyles in Russia.

The bill submitted by the United Russia party last November caused a furore among the country’s gay rights and human rights watchdogs, who found its wording discriminatory.

“Hell's teeth, Fry wrote in his Twitter feed. Something must be done to stop these fantastical monsters. Will talking about Tchaikovsky be banned?” the versatile actor, once named the second most influential gay person in Britain, added.

The new version of the law describes what is meant by “public activities aimed at the propaganda of sodomy, lesbianism, bisexuality, and transgender among youth.”

Such actions include “spreading information that can damage the health and moral development of underage children, and make them believe that both traditional and gay relationships are normal.”
From now on, promoting homosexuality will be punishable by fines ranging from $168 to $16,800.
The law also deals with the promotion of pedophilia.

St. Petersburg’s LGBT community came out onto the streets in anger at the controversial law, but the rally was dispersed by police in no time, with one of the protesters arrested.

Activists in Moscow have asked for permission to hold a gay pride parade for several years – in vain, with the city’s former Mayor Yury Luzhkov once describing them as "satanic".

Last year, the European Court of Human Rights ruled that Russia had to pay 30,000 euros in compensation to gay activists over its decision to ban such parades in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Dress to impress before you protest

What to wear to protest with style? Some Russian designers have been using the street protests as an opportunity to promote their fashion ideas, teaching the country’s politically-minded fashion lovers to clearly show their political views.

Holocaust film director’s French charm ‘misunderstood’

Flirting at Israel’s main airport can be as dangerous as carrying a bomb, as the creator of the key documentary about the Holocaust has been detained at Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion after an employee claimed the 86-year-old tried to sexually harass her.

I love how Russians always feel the need to relate being same-sex attracted to western culture as if it's something people in the west made up. It's the same way dictators talk about democracy and human rights - as if they belong to the west. Freedom, and the equal treatment of all human beings (regardless of  their sexuality)  is not some western invention, it's a human reality. It's something fought for by people who are black, white, male, female, gay, and straight. Wake up Russia you are a backward disgrace.

Just to make myself clear again: "WAY TO GO RUSSIA!!!". All my support to the russian people and the laws in St. Petersburg which are absolutely in place! I hope in Serbia when this western puppet gays (well sometimes it's not only sexuality it is the "LIFESTYLE" unfortunately) are gone, some smart politician will pass the same laws in Serbia as a whole! I'm sure everyone knows how these "Gay Parades" pass in Serbia, I don't have to remind anyone about that. So stop propagating your own views of how sex should look like, who should I F and who not, stop parading and we will all have peace!
