"Golden Mask" theatre festival kicked off in Moscow

The annual festival rewarding the best of the theatrical performances worldwide opened Saturday on the New Stage of the Bolshoi Theatre. Over fifty performances were in line for the prestigious “Golden Mask” award.
Names of the winners in several categories were known one month before the festival actually started. "Lipsynch" of the Canadian theatre Ex Machina was named best foreign performance shown in Russia in 2009. Celebrated and numerously rewarded Soviet actors of theatre and cinema, Vera Vasileva and Vladimir Zeldin, are to receive the award “For Honor and Dignity” as well as is the soloist of the Novosibirsk theatre of musical comedy, Ivan Romashko.
Further, awards for the support of the theatre art in Russia will be given to the head of the department of Presidential affairs, Vladimir Kozhin, the president of the “Finpromko” United plants, Anatoly Pavlov, and to Mikhail Prokhorov’s Charity Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
The culmination of the festival, the rewarding ceremony, will take place at Moscow’s Gostinny Dvor on April 16. The festival runs from March 27 through April 15.
The Golden Mask is the National Theatre Award established in 1994 by the Theatre Union of Russia and is aimed to mark the best productions in all genres of theatre art: drama, opera, ballet, operetta and musical, and puppet theatre. In the spring of each year it presents in the capital the most significant performances from all over Russia.
