A painting by an outstanding avant-garde Russian artist has gone under the hammer for over $10 million at Christie’s Impressionist and Modern Art Evening Sale in London.
Natalia Goncharova’s “Espagnole” has been described as one of her largest, most ambitious and important works.
A fusion of Cubo-Futurist form and structure with the details and patterns of the costume of a Spanish dancer, the intensely-worked oil painting “Espagnole” blends abstract form with dynamic movement and dashing colour.
The trailblazing Russian artist made the Spanish-themed painting in Europe around 1916, during the First World War. According to art experts, it is “one of a groundbreaking series of works that merged the two great disciplines for which Goncharova is best known – painting and theater design – into a unique expression of both.”
It is not the first time Gonahcrova has raised a phenomenal amount of money at Christie’s. Back in 2008 her painting “Les Fleurs” also sold for over $10 million.
