Mystery in the East, legend in the West
An outstanding Russian painter and the pioneer of geometric abstract art, Kazimir Malevich, was born on this day in 1879.
His childhood was spent far from the centers of culture amid sugarbeet plantations in the Ukraine.
Malevich taught himself to draw at the age of 15 when his mother gave him a painting set.
In Russia, he is most famous for his painting "Black Square" which, according to Malevich, took him a good couple of months to complete and the interpretation of which continues to divide critics to this day.
In the West, he became a symbol of a Russian revolutionary, which caused his named to be banned for many years in the USSR.
Greatest film star found in a cafe
On this day in 1944, Oleg Yankovsky, the star of stage and screen and the hero of most Russian women's hearts, was born.
Yankovsky’s talent was discovered by accident when the director of his future first film noticed his expressive face in a cafe.
During his remarkably prolific screen career, Yankovsky appeared in many film adaptations of Russian classics, notably “My Sweet and Tender Beast”.

Yankovsky excelled in psychologically sophisticated roles of modern intellectuals – such as his portrayal of Baron Munchhausen from the movie of the same name.
In the West, however, he is better known for his parts in Tarkovsky's movies “The Mirror” and “Nostalgia”.
