Longest missile crisis takes off
On this day in 1962, the Cuban Missile Crisis began.
Hostilities between the US and the Soviet Union brought the world to the brink of nuclear conflict.
On October 14, photographs taken by a U-2 spy plane offered irrefutable evidence. Soviet medium-range missiles in Cuba, designed to carry nuclear warheads, were stationed 90 miles off the American border.

Pearl of Russian architecture completed
On this day in 1165, the construction of Russia’s most beautiful church was finished.
Its full name is the Church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin on the Nerl River. The first part hints on the big Orthodox holiday celebrated on October 14. The second underlines that the church stands on an embankment.
The walls of the church are slightly tilted inwards. This makes it look delicate, although it is far from petite in size.
