“The Idiot” is the title of one of the most famous novels by Dostoevsky. It’s also become the name of a Moscow exhibition by the unconventional American artist Tony Matelli.

There are only three art works by Matelli on display at the Gary Tatintsian gallery, but apparently there’s much more behind each of them than meets the eye.

"Weeds" by Tony Matelli
One of the highlights, of course, is “The Idiot”, a bronze sculpture in the form of a used Budweiser beer can. But what looks like trash at first sight could turn into a meaningful piece of contemporary art at a closer look.

In an interview with trendy Russian art dealer, Gary Tatintsian, Chicago-born Tony Matelli described himself as a “romantic artist”.

Romantic? – Maybe. Sarcastic? – For sure.

Matelli’s famous installation, “Weeds”, has become his signature piece. This time, his die-hard weeds have occupied almost the whole space of the gallery, symbolizing decay and negligence. On the other hand, their vitality could also stand for determination and character.

Matelli’s own rebellious nature comes through in his “Fuck It, Free Yourself” installation that features two one-hundred-dollar banknotes ablaze. But for some mind-boggling reason, the fire fails to consume the bucks. You’re wondering what exactly Tony wanted to say? – Re-read the title of the piece.
