International Booker Prize line-up: Russian author nominated

Russian writer and dramatist Ludmila Ulitskaya is on the shortlist for the International Booker Prize. A total of 14 authors from 12 countries, are competing for the honour. Seven of the books are also translations.
The shortlist was made up by two-time Booker winner Peter Carey, the Australian writer who is once again nominated for the award.
Pulitzer Prize-winner Jane Smiley, chair of the judges, announced the shortlist in New York on March 18.
“We've all read books by authors we have never heard of before…, which have turned out to be some of the best books we’ve ever read… For us it’s been a rare combination of education and delight,” she said.
India's Mahasweta Devi, Croatian Dubravka Ugresic, Arnost Lustig from the Czech Republic, Italian Antonio Tabucchi, Peruvian Manuel Vargas Llosa and 2001 Nobel Laureate VS Naipaul from Trinidad made it to the list.
James Kelman from the UK, Americans Evan Connell and E L Doctorow, Alice Munro from Canada, and Ngugi Wa Thiong’O from Kenya, make up the remaining nominees.
The winner will be announced at the beginning of May. The prize of £60,000 will be handed over at a ceremony in Dublin. A separate award of £15,000 will be paid to the translator.
