RT caught up with Natalia Solzhenitsyna at a book launch of her husband, writer Alexander Solzhenitsyn's latest biography.
Does this book do any justice to your husbands life and work?
My husband never left anyone ambivalent. There were people who loved him and those who hated him. And besides, the KGB distributed incorrect information about him. The biography, if it's facts have been checked properly, and I know this one is extremely correct, will play a unique role in destroying the negative myths created in the USSR about Solzhenitsyn. The author inbestigated every accusation. I hope readers will be left much a much clearer picture.
Do you feel comfortable here?
Comfortable or not, we are happy here…we have the Russian language and our friends around us. When we lived in the States, we always felt we were in exile…it was difficult. Even though we think there are many things that aren’t right in Russia, we choose to be with our people, even if it isn’t the most comfortable way to live.
Is Russia heading the right way?
My husband said many times that he thinks Russia took the most unfair, most painful, and the most ineffective path out of communism. All of his publicity over the last 14 years has been around his hope that Russia will move in the the right direction. At the same time all the fears that Russia might return to totalitarianism and stalinism are completely unjustified. Now that we have the internet and the freedom of travelling abroad, going back to Soviet oppression is impossible in Russia. My husband is very critical of current affairs in Russia. But unlike other critics, we think Russia is doing well. We believe in the right future for Russia but it requires a lot of work.
Did you ever think your husband could've chosen a safer path for your family?
We were always a fighter’s team, I have always supported him in his most difficult decisions. We have always approached life rationally together and believe that the best defense is to attack.
