Investigative journalism just got a whole lot harder in Ukraine. A new law makes it illegal for journalists to uncover the private lives of politicians without their consent.

The collecting, spreading and storage of confidential information about a person, without his or her permission is now deemed an invasion of privacy. The only exception is cases of national security.

Ukrainian reporters will not have to think twice about unveiling the unsavoury side of political life in their country. If they fall foul of the law the writers face a fine of $2000, and up to five years in prison.

'Press Freedom Index' is total Western propaganda...Complete garbage.... The Index is designed to improve the access & credibility of lying Western journalists who are subverting unsophisticated  societies.
Ukrainian politicians obviously inacted this law to hide influence peddling and dirty money they are receiving from the West...This is the last straw for a nation that has been colonized by the EU

Too bad for Ukraine to do this, because so often the so-called "private lives" of politicians turn out to have major public consequences. Reporters Without Borders in its 2010 report on Press Freedom Index ranked Ukraine at #131, a bit above Russia's #140 position. With this latest law, Ukraine might be sinking closer to the Russia ranking. Interesting to see that Georgia ranked at #99 position.
