Light drawing, freezing light or light graffiti – all it takes is imagination, a camera and a small lamp. This is all you need to create a mysterious photo work, picturing light in motion.
On August 22 "Samolet" gallery in Moscow opened the exhibition “Freezelight” to present the best photo works made by the trailblazers of Russian light graffiti – Freezelight.ru crew.
The effect of “frozen” light is created by photographing the traces left by a moving lamp using a long shutter speed camera. Intelligently “drawn” light abstractions can take any form and are always a surprise for the creator.

Pablo Picasso is considered the pioneer of “freezelight” art. In 1949 the photographer of “LIFE” magazine Gjon Mili came to Picasso’s art studio and told him about his experiments in photography and so-called “space drawing”. The photographer attached small lamps to the boots of skaters and, photographing them in motion, witnessed light-traces hanging in the air. Having seen those shots, the artist decided to attempt to “draw” something with light. The result was projected onto the film in Gjon Mili’s camera. Picasso tried to draw his favorite character – a centaur.
Today thousands of people in different countries around the world experiment with light drawing. In Russia art group Freezelight.ru became the first official community of light-drawing artists.
At the exhibition 40 of the group’s best works made with digital or medium-format film camera will be displayed. All of the photographs are “genuine,” no Photoshop or other special effects were applied to them. The proof is in the slides attached to the prints.
Anyone can try capturing light with a camera and to help the beginners Freezelight.ru members will give free masterclasses in the gallery every week till the closure of the display on October 1.
