You can barely count with your fingers the number of people in the world who can paint on a rice grain or make shoes for a flea. One of them is Vladimir Aniskin, the creator of mini-masterpieces.

For the master of micro miniature sculptures, even such tiny things as a human hair or a slice of a grape seed can become blank canvases for his creations.

His craft takes a steady hand, a lot of patience, and very powerful lenses. For example it took Vladimir two months to make a pair of tiny Cinderella’s slippers.

“If you hold your breath and concentrate, the tip of the needle starts shaking along with your heart beat. In between beats I have about half a second to do something. So that's how I work – in between heart beats,” he explains.

Vladimir created the smallest oil painting of a desert in the world – all in the eye of a needle.

Regarding his pastime, wife Svetlana Aniskina says, “This hobby takes more concentration than any other I suppose! So when he's at it – I try to stay away! But then I get the reward of being the first one to see the result!”

On top of his insect antics, one of Aniskin’s works, a mini collection of the planets, is on display in a museum in St. Petersburg.
