For the first time the oldest Chinese circus, the Shandong provincial acrobatic troupe is coming to Moscow to show what the best acrobatics is all about.

The legendary acrobatic troupe was born centuries ago in the cradle of Chinese civilization, Shandong province, the homeland of the great philosopher Confucius. In Shandong stands Mount Tai, from which Chinese emperors spoke to the Sky and to the Earth, and in Shandong the Yellow River falls into the sea. It is in this spiritual land that the oldest of all Chinese circus troupes was born.

Many small troupes of Chinese acrobats have existed for hundreds of years in Shandong province. In 1956 the government collected all these troupes together and officially established the Shandong provincial acrobatic troupe.

The origins of the show’s name are self-evident: it’s called “Miracles of the Yellow River.” Performers spend years training their body and spirit. In the program they demonstrate enormous concentration and physical prowess, along with impressive artistic qualities that keep the spectators’ eyes glued to them throughout the performance.

The biggest difference between the Chinese and the Western circus is that the Western circuses have animals in the shows, but Chinese acrobatic shows are more like theater shows, no animals. When the European circuses have clowns, animals and aerial acts, like flying above the stage, the Chinese acrobatic shows are focused on stage, like in theater.

Circus art in China is an ancient tradition. For Chinese people, the circus has always been like a special temple where a man can reveal his hidden abilities. It has never been taken as a place of cheap laughter or just a leisure spot, but a place visited by connoisseurs in order to praise the masters.

The show program includes 10 routines, five of which have received international awards, including the Golden Clown and the Golden Lion.

The demanding public in Moscow can enjoy the stunning performance of the Chinese circus in the capital’s Variety Theatre until August 2.
