Versatile American artist Rhodessa Jones will present her much-talked of, award-winning program “Medea Project: Theater for Incarcerated Women” in the Russian capital.
Rhodessa created her “Medea” 18 years ago. The idea was to help jailed women regain self-respect and reexamine their past by means of creative workshops – theater productions based on women’s true personal stories.
Back in 1986, Jones was offered to teach aerobics to the women at the San Francisco City Jail. The life-changing job experience made her an actress, playwright, teacher and a human rights activist.
Last year the unconventional artist made history when she staged a full-length theater performance with female convicts in the Johannesburg Correctional Services – better known as the “Sun City” prison – for the first time in South African history.
Jones is also the author of the award-winning series of monologues “Big Butt Girls, Hard Headed Women” which she will unveil in Moscow on September 21.
