A picture painted by Vladimir Putin will be sold at a charity auction, which will take place in St. Petersburg on January 17 2009.
The Prime Minister had a whirl at painting in the end of December, 2008, having visited the Christmas fair. There he took part in the Alphabet project in which celebrities are invited to draw pictures connected with letters of the Russian alphabet.
The Prime Minister’s letter was ‘U’. As Vesti reported, Putin painted it in the form of a frosty pattern on window glass with the help of the artist Nadezhda.
The Governor of St. Petersburg, Valentina Matvienko, participates regularly in such charitable actions. At the previous auction two of her pictures were sold for 2.2 million roubles ($US 71000) and 11 million roubles ($US 356000) respectively. For the auction of 2009 she will present her work under the name “Blizzard”.
In 2009 opera singer Anna Netrebko will take part in the Alphabet project, along with ballet dancer Ulyana Lopatkina, and musician Maxim Shostakovich.
The money earned at the auction will be given to socially significant city establishments which are in great need of material support. It will also be used to support the city’s children's hospital and to create an oncology department.
