By combining latest media technologies with art for the sake of telling human stories, a multimedia exhibition kicks off at Krasny Oktyabr factory’s "Chocolate workshop” on Friday.
The exhibition, entitled “Projections of Reality,” features over 20 multimedia projections based on documentary photography and video data from both famous and amateur photographers, including the winners of World Press Photo contests, Brenda Ann Kennelly and Tim Hetherington.
The curator of the project, Liza Factor, says that displaying classical art in a new media format is "a risky experiment not only in domestic, but also in the international exhibition context".
"However we consider that the Russian public is ready for it. Leaning against the experience of annual World Press Photo displays in Moscow, we were convinced that the spectators are not indifferent to the stories of simple people collected from all corners of the world," Faktor added.
The exposition represents an eclectic collection of stories, touching upon many different themes and geographical places – from military service in Afghanistan to bicycle rides in Norway. And new technologies reduce the distance between the spectator and the characters of the stories to a minimum, thereby creating the effect of presence.
“As perceiving visual information in traditional mass-media and exhibition formats becomes more difficult, it’s very important to show new tools of visual narration, a new stage of mutual relations of the photographers-story-tellers and their audience," Faktor says.
The exhibition, which opens on March 6 and continues through March 28, is also planned to be shown in other Russia regions and abroad during 2010-2011.
