One of Moscow’s oldest and most important privately-owned art galleries, “Regina”, will soon have a twin sister in the UK, due on April 30.
“Regina Gallery London” will have a permanent address in the bohemian Fitzrovia – at 22 Eastcastle Street – in the neighborhood of fancy galleries, restaurants and boutiques.
The two-storey building in the heart of London will house its first large-scale exhibition by the unconventional Russian artist, Semyon Faibisovich, whose name is familiar in the UK, especially following the recent success of his exhibition at Birmingham’s Ikon gallery.
Entitled “Les Misérables”, it will be Faibisovich’s fist personal exhibition in the UK capital. Apart from works earlier presented in Birmingham, it will feature twelve brand-new works which have not been put on display before.
Regina’s owner Vladimir Ovcharenko was quoted as saying, the Russian art market holds good prospects in the UK given “Moscow and London are twins.” He also told Kommersant daily that should Regina Gallery London prove to be a success, plans for further expansion could follow.
Established by Vladimir and Regina Ovcharenko back in 1990, Regina Gallery regularly takes part in the leading art fairs, including Frieze Art Fair, Art Basel Miami Beach and The Armory Show; its artists are regulars at major Biennales including Documenta, Sao Paulo and Venice.
